Karen Rojas was not missing for a weekend. She was missing from June 2, 2020 until March 10, 2026: five years, nine months, and eight days. That is almost six years.[1][4] She disappeared at age five and was found at age eleven.[1][5] In other words, she was a school-age child the entire time. The entire time. She was not hidden only in infancy, before records and routines begin to form. She was old enough to be enrolled, counted, documented, taught, and seen, year after year. And according to public reporting, that is exactly what happened: she was found in North Carolina enrolled in school under an alias.[4][5][6]
That fact should outrage anyone paying attention. A missing child did not just evade discovery. She appears to have moved through ordinary institutional life for nearly six years while the systems most likely to see her, school enrollment, identity records, child-welfare follow-up, and interstate coordination, failed to bring her back.[2][3][4][5][6] If the public record is accurate, this case now requires more than relief and celebration. It requires a serious investigation into how a child reported missing in California could remain in classrooms under another name until 2026. Who accepted the records? Who failed to question them? What safeguards broke down between Los Angeles County and North Carolina? And how many other children in family-abduction cases are being treated as paperwork instead of emergencies?
This should not be allowed to dissolve into a happy-ending headline. Karen Rojas was recovered alive, and that matters deeply. But recovery does not erase the failure that came before it. A child was missing for almost six years while still living through the very years when schools, agencies, and public systems are supposed to be watching most closely. That demands a full accounting.
